Advanced Diagnostics
Our hospital is pleased to provide your pets with a wide variety of advanced diagnostic options. Blood testing, whether routine or diagnostic, can be performed in-house. These tests include a comprehensive chemistry profile, which provide indicators of the health and function of your pet's organ systems and fluid balance. A complete blood count provides a detailed look at blood cells, indicating oxygen-carrying ability, immune system status, ability to clot, and overall health. Wellness testing has many benefits to your pet's health, including establishing healthy baseline values, identifying unseen disease at an early stage, serving as a pre-anesthetic health screen for a surgical or dental procedure, and increased safety for patients starting or receiving medication.

Routine testing is always important in monitoring the health of any animal. Aside from a comprehensive chemistry profile and a complete blood count, the Carthage Veterinary Clinic also offers heartworm testing and intestinal parasite screens. We recommend yearly heartworm testing and often utilize a 4-way combination test. This combo test not only checks for heartworm infection, but also for diseases carried by ticks, including Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis. Intestinal parasite screens (commonly called fecal exams) monitor for parasites such as tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and coccidia. Ask at your next visit what testing should be performed on your pet! Urinalysis testing is also an important part of keeping your pet healthy. We offer sediment staining as well as standard urinalysis procedures to increase the likelihood of accurately diagnosing kidney or urinary bladder disease early on.

Many types of diseases are also diagnosed via imaging technologies. At the Carthage Veterinary Clinic, we are pleased to offer digital radiography and ultrasonography. Digital radiography allows a more clear image of soft tissues and bone structures, allowing a faster, more accurate diagnosis. Ultrasonography images are captured in real time, meaning the image seen is not a static image. Intestinal motility (how well and how fast the intestines are moving), pregnancy diagnosis and staging (by allowing heartbeats of the unborn fetus(es) to be seen), and echocardiography (watching how the heart beats and how efficient the valves close) are just some of the benefits to real-time imaging offered by ultrasound.

Other types of advanced diagnostics include fluorescein staining of the eye to check for corneal ulcers, Schirmer tear testing to check for adequate tear production, ear cytology to diagnose the cause of inflamed or infected ears, and abdominocentesis to assist in the diagnosis of certain types of abdominal diseases. We hope your pet never needs to experience these types of advanced diagnostic tests, but we are here to provide those services if the need arises.

Surgical Services
Our veterinary team at the Carthage Veterinary Clinic strive to bring you the most up-to-date care in the surgical field. Our advanced equipment, including an isoflurane anesthetic machine, and heated surgical table allows for a safer anesthetic experience for the animal, with smoother inductions and recoveries. Our staff is trained to carefully monitor your pet from the time of induction of anesthesia through recovery. We also offer pre-surgical blood testing to monitor for unforeseen health issues. All of these services contribute to a more safe, overall surgical experience. Our surgical services include dental health, ovariohysterectomies (spay) and orchidectomies (neuter), soft tissue surgeries and orthopedic work.

Wellness Care
Pet wellness is of primary concern to the Carthage Veterinary Clinic. We feel that by improving the health screening and vaccination status of pets, many diseases can either be prevented or decreased in severity. A complete wellness care plan includes routine vaccinations and regular physical examinations. Any time your pet visits the clinic, a complete physical examination is performed. As pets age, blood testing may be needed to uncover diseases in their earliest stages. Routine testing may include heartworm examinations, intestinal parasite screening, a complete blood count, and a comprehensive chemistry profile.

Boarding Services
The Carthage Veterinary Clinic also offers year-round boarding facilities for pets. Your pet will receive loving care and attention during your absence. We offer the choice of providing your own food or utilizing in-house diets during your pet's stay.
